Recruit Profile: Drew Urquhart

2014 is shaping up to be a crucial recruiting class for the Zags. With many prospects listing interest from Gonzaga, it appears the staff is willing to search far and wide in hopes of bringing in another stellar class of players. Once again we turn our attention north of the border, to British Columbia, where the Zags have begun to show interest in 2014 forward Drew Urquhart. Recently we caught up with Drew who stated Tommy Lloyd has been in contact with his people. Drew  has garnered attention from other D1 schools as well (Washington, Boston College, NMSU to name a few).

Urquhart is a very intriguing prospect who, at only  6’8, is more often than not the tallest player on the court. While his height as a post player might not stand out to you, it's his superior guard skill set that really sets him apart. His hybrid game, with the ability to play inside and out, creates a match up nightmare for opposing team’s defenses at the high school level. At the moment his biggest strengths are his perimeter and mid-range game, but his passing and ball handling are also noticeably advanced as well.

Being a young player, who could conceivably still reclassify for 2015, there are still question marks and areas for improvement surrounding Urquhart's game. The most prominent concern right now is his lack of a true position to play defensively at the next level. As a small forward, Urquhart’s unique offensive talent would be put to best use, but his foot speed and quickness would need work if he were to guard smaller more athletic 3’s. If he were to transition to being a post player, he would need to spend considerable time in the weight room and it might not allow him to play to some of his greatest strengths. No matter where Urquhart ultimately ends up, he still has plenty of time to develop and hone his game in the coming years. We look forward to watching his progress and will make sure to give updates on all news regarding him.
