Recruit Profile: Michael Carrera

With the rumors floating around that the Zags have a recruit visit lined up for this weekend, many people have been tossing around names. Clyde Santee has been mentioned, also Sekou Wiggs, even Savon Goodman. One of the more intriguing names ive heard is Michael Carrera. Carrera is a 6-6 wing out of Montrose Christian in Maryland.

In a recent Washington Post article, he mentions the Zags, George Mason, George Washington, Pittsburgh, Temple, and Richmond as the schools he is considering. Michael originally hails from Venezuela and plans on playing somewhere his family will feel comfortable. Its likely his parents would join him on a visit to Spokane and would want to have a chance to tour the area. His father, Luis, was a professional ball player in Venezuela.

Michael has a great work ethic, and is known for his high motor. He is very athletic, shows great leaping ability as well as excellent conditioning.  He rebounds exceptionally well for his size and would have no trouble handling spot duty at Power Forward, although he is slightly under sized for the position. He is still learning the game, but has shown some polished offensive moves as well as good footwork. His coach, Stu Vetter had this to say about Michael:

"He has tremendous hands, his hands are strong and big, one of the best sets of hands I've ever coached. He runs well and jumps extremely well, but is still in the process of learning the game of basketball."

The Zags have been involved in Michaels recruitment for a couple years now, and with him finally making some official visits, its likely he will be heading out to Spokane in the near future, perhaps even this weekend. We will keep you posted as we learn more. As always, GO ZAGS!

Here is a short clip of Montrose Christian, Carrera is #42

From what i have read, Carrera is a power forward. Could he play SF in Div 1?

no question about it, carrera has hops and can throw it down. any idea if he can hit jumpers out to the elbow? how's his bball IQ?

His Basketball IQ is developing, remember he is raw and is still learning the game. From all ive seen hes not really a shooter and doesnt have great range, he seems more like a smallish post player with his current style of play, that being said he is 6-6 so its likely the staff would work with him on extending his range and helping turn him into more of a wing.

Scott,

We've been snooping around and it looks to be either Santee or Carrera but nothing solid. Nobody has arrived as of yet....so it is still a bit of a mystery.

My concern with Carrera is that he could be a Pendo that can't hit the three. Pendo could hit the three, yet he was still too small to be a legit power forward. From the limited vids available on him, Carrera looks to be somewhat similiar.

If he becomes a Zag, the staff better have a good plan to help him develop a decent shot.

According to many sources, Savon is reclassifying to 2013 and attending Brewster Academy...so im pretty sure he wont be in spokane...http://www.cardiachill.com/2012/5/8/3006096/savon-goodman-reclassifying-brewster-academy-pitt-basketball-recruiting-pittsburgh-panthers

Yeah i read that too. But i also read he is taking trips now so he can be in school by June. Temple and SMU are hot on his heels. So we will see if he is coming to Spokane this weekend or another school.
Google Savon Goodman Zagsblog and you will see the story i am talking about.

Zaga, weren't you going to call me tonight? I have been waiting here all night!

Just kidding. LOL

Karen and Oliver Pierce with compliance at Gonzaga are tough nuts to crack. I couldn't get even so much as a hint out of them.

It's against NCAA rules for them to comment AT ALL. Oh well, the build up is exciting, hahaha.

Googled it, this is what you are speaking about?

Interesting the conflicting story lines, it does appear he is at least taking his visits before May 16...If he is flying out west right now, he may in fact spend some time in Spokane before or after he goes to vegas to meet UNLV...very real possibility...We will know more soon...Promise to keep everybody posted as we get news...

I was hoping he was not going to visit UNLV but i did see he follows Kaitan Rhinehardt on twitter. Isnt UNLV out of scholarships yet? And UNLV probably gets Bennett too.
