Kevin Pangos: the next breakout star?

With the likely departure of Kelly Olynyk, who will be the next breakout star for Gonzaga?  In this ESPN article, Myron Medcalf and Eamonn Brennan discuss possible breakout stars next season: Kevin Pangos is one such player.

I think with Kelly having such an amazing year, GU departed a bit from the guards being the focus and primary scorers. Since Kelly is likely gone, Kevin may have a breakout year as I don't see the front court being so dominant.

I hope Karnowski and Dower have great years, but I think the additions of Coleman and Nunez with Kyle and Drew will be more effective in supporting Kevin and Gary.

Bell is a much better player. Better defender, and better at creating open 3s.

Some have said Coleman was the best player in camp. I'll be making sure to get a first hand look this off-season.

If Pangos could develop his game to the level of a Craft at Ohio State that would be great.

Bell seems to lack confidence for whatever reason. Perhaps with the different personnel the focus will be more on him, he has tons of ability.

There are always surprises in the off-season. New recruits, transfers in/out, somebody steps up huge and surprises.

My concern is the "leftness" of our front-court, and lack of depth there.

We'll be watching this summers development with great interest and keeping everybody informed.

Yeah as much as I love Pangos it isn't too difficult to stop him. All you have to do is tell a defensive minded player to face guard him. He runs off screens well and it's great that he has developed a floater, but he doesn't create off the dribble as well as Bell or (apparently) Coleman does.

That said, having a pair of slashing players like Bell and Coleman means you need someone for them to kick the ball out to, so Pangos might have a huge year knocking down open and transition threes.

I agree with kg. Pangos is a complementary player -- not the guy that is going to be the primary focus of the other team. A good 1 on 1 defender often makes him disappear. For that matter, nets outside of Spokane often reject his shots with regularity.

I have been pulling for Bell for the 2 years he has been at GU. He has all the potential and has played great but hasn't received the recognition of other players. Here's hoping he has a breakout season along with Pangos, Coleman, Barham, Dranginis, Karnowski, Dower, etc.....
