How to deal with the GU Blues

We have all been there, whether it was March 23, 2006 or Jan 19th 2013. It is a feeling that rarely comes, but when someone comes down with the GU Loss Blues it is no joking matter. While we all our own particular ways for dealing with a heartbreaking loss. I have scoured the depths of my pain to come up with 10 ways to deal with the GU Blues.

1. Watch and remember the good old times. The 1999 run, the Maui game, the Meech runner, or The Pangos 33 point explosion, better yet watch them all again and again!

2. Dig through your closet to find your JP Batista voodoo doll (you know the one) and paste Stockton's picture over it. It won't change the past, but it might make you feel a little better.

3. Play a video game. Particularly play any video game where you can be Gonzaga and you can play Butler and destroy them time and time again.

4. Desecrate anything that says Butler. I would hate for any fan to support Butler right now, so go to the store, buy a manikin that looks like a Butler and destroy it; burn it, smash it, melt it, it doesn't matter just destroy it.

5. Vent. While venting will make you feel better it may stress out your fellow Bulldogs, so vent on this blog. This will can be a support group for you, full of fellow fans just as angry as you are.

6. Go to the gym. You have a couple of choices here. You could go work out until you can't feel anything anymore or you just practice passing the ball inbounds until you are confident you can do it better than Stockton.

7. Focus on the next game.

8. Adopt a dog from your local rescue shelter. This has nothing to do with basketball, but they need a home and you need something to bring you joy in your life.

9. Cry. Grab a chick flick, grab some tissues, and just get it all out of your system.

10. When all else fails...Drink... a lot.

Yes, this game almost 24 hours later still hurts more than any other in recent memory. Despite all my bravado of its only a college basketball game, it still smarts.

This game was doomed for us before it ever began. With Rotnie getting hurt we were in a no win situation. If we won, it would only be because their best player was hurt. Now that we lost some say it would have been by more if he was playing. We also had plane mechanical trouble, a referee getting his picture taken with Carke, Butler being known as a "physical" team, giving them more leniency in their play, and a College Gameday buildup that has not been rivaled in years. Oh yeah, this game was doomed from the beginning.

Despite all that, we played through all this diversity and almost pulled it out. I can't blame Stockton for the last play at all. Overall, an exciting game and I hope we play with a chip on our shoulder the rest of the year and go far in the tourney.

Thank you! Needed this

Why didn't Few have Stockton throw it to someone under OUR basket?...why....why, whyyyyyyyyyy?!

There would not have been time enough to get the ball across the court EVEN IF there was a turnover!!~ One dumb mistake and our potential 1 seed just evaporated. %!@#!#@$#@@!@!@#!~

Thanks for laying out a "wellness" plan......it's just that at this point I don't want to feel better, lol.

On a side note, will my innocent lil mini Schnauzers ever recuperate from my rather loud TV tirade and stop looking at me that way? I can't take the guilt...

We were never going to get a 1 seed. Duke, Michigan, Louisville, Syracuse and Kansas are going to be vying for that 1 seed even if they end up with 4-5 losses.

We still can get a 2 seed but even money has us with the first 3 seed. Not too bad and much better than our 7-10 seeds we have been getting lately.

Despite everyone questioning why Stockton didn't throw the ball more towards our own basket the answer is easy. Tossing it to Olynyk was the right call. The plan was for Kelly to get fouled, which he was. We just didn't get the call. Take some steps back and think about it. If it worked like it should have with the foul being called no one would be saying anything. Because we had a bad break go against us everyone is down on Few for being a lousy in game coach.

too many missed opportunities. Not enough production from the back court, refs let them play, and IMO GU did well just to get in the lead as Butler controlled the second half. Jones did push off and Kelly did break to the left and Stockton rushed the pass a bit....and Jones hit a miracle shot....that is the way it goes sometimes. Hard to play well enough to win and then not...but it builds character and thus far, this team is pulling together as a result (if twitter is an indication)

KP with 5 points, GBJ with 0, MH with 0, DS with 3 the back court scored 9 points in the ENTIRE game. GU missed 27 shots, KO shot nearly 20% under his average and still this GU team had the lead and the ball with 3.5 seconds left. For me, that speaks to the toughness of this team and I am happy to see it.

I will take the loss and a tougher, stronger team than to escape with a win and not learn the lesson this one instilled.

Eyes on the prize ppl! Eyes on the prize! GO ZAGS!

Gaztastic is right.

IF the pass goes away their our basket and deep down the floor even if it is intercepted the guy making the play is moving away from the basket -- that's two seconds right there. Then they have to get it up about 80% of the floor and get a shot off . . . from half court roughly.

This game was 100% winnable. Few is the culprit here. Not Stocks. It hurts to lose. It hurts more when the coach gives it away.

Yep Quid..it hurts....

at least lob it to Harris who is a good 70-80 feet from the Butler basket! oi.

Why in the world were the two guards on the Butler side!? everything and everyone should have been on the GU side with KP maybe breaking towards the other if stocks can not get it in.

Last play on Few but not the game...not IMO.

Gonzagapride, I respectfully disagree that we never had a shot at a #1 seed, partially based on what was said on ESPN's live show by Senior Sportswriter Andy Katz when he was asked that very question just a day or so before the Butler game.

Here is what he said about our chance of getting a #1 seed: "Yes. It is very possible. The amount of road/neutral wins for Gonzaga could keep the Zags in the discussion for a No. 1 out West." We would have had to win out, but that is off the table now, grrrr.

Also, IMO tossing to ball to KO was the wrong call. Refs will almost NEVER give you the call in that type of situation. The coaches know this. It should have been passed deep into our back-court where there would have been no chance of them making a shot even if we turned it over. Coach Few knows this. He said they didn't have any timeouts to work the play out correctly. It was his fault for not having the players practiced up for a scenario such as this.

And so it goes, bring on Butler.

Gonzagapride is correct, GU would not get a #1 seed. Most likely a 3-4 seed this year.

Gonzagapride is correct IMO, GU would have never been a 1 seed. 3 or 4 seed this year.

I hear you on both counts and intellectually agree with you. Just my own self-preservation of trying to rationalize everything we lost with that klunker of a last play.
