Recruit Profile: Angel Nunez

According to Adam Zagoria over at Zagsblog.com, former Louisville Cardinal Sophomore forward Angel Nunez will visit Gonzaga starting Thursday 12/27 through Saturday 12/29. This means he will be in attendance for the Gonzaga-Baylor game and have a chance to see the campus in a quieter, less hectic setting with most of the students on winter break.

I live in Louisville and have had the chance to see Angel play in person at a few scrimmages and games. He is tall and slender with a good outside shot but seems to disappear at times. He had a tendency to not play focused defense, often frustrating Pitino who preaches to the defensive side of the ball. He most certainly could provide some outside shooting off the bench and has loads of potential, but he doesn't appear to be the type that would be more than a 7th or 8th man off the bench. Angel has had an unlucky string of injuries and illnesses that have conspired to keep him off the court, ultimately culminating in what Coach Rick Pitino called the worst concussion hes ever seen earlier this season. His health is going to obviously be a concern for the GU staff. He still has red-shirt eligibility and will likely be eligible as a sophomore after he sits a year, this could bode well for him if he can get in the weight room and practice with our guys, perhaps he can find a role in Spokane. We will keep you posted as we learn more.

If he comes to gonzaga i hope he can use his length to be a good on the ball defender, or block austin daye style.

from my knowledge he is a liability on defense, Rick Pitino rarely played him due to him not understanding the system they used and having trouble following his man and providing proper defensive support...apparently hes really, really bad on that end of the floor...

You can be a pretty good defender for most programs but not for Pitino...he expects excellent defensive effort and execution.

with that said....

Watching the video, he looks very talented and long on the offensive side but, a bit lackadaisical in most everything he does...and running back on D his hands flop to his sides, he is standing pretty much straight up and appears to see playing D as a necessary evil of the game....if this is still the case, I hope GU goes a different direction.

As far as minutes....he is 6'8" and he looks to be able to play the 3 or the 4...and with Elias and Guy gone, it is an area GU will need to fill...

I dunno if this guy is Zag material. He has some skills and he has some size but I'm not sure he would be all that effective.

Then again, if he commits to an Olynik style red shirt year, who knows where he might go?

He is officially a Zag.

Wrong

He's upset because be wants playing time, he told Pitino he wanted to play more and Pitino said no so he left school that day. You really didn't know that? Both he and the coach confirmed that??

Zags are lucky to get our cast offs. He should be able to compete in that high school conference you play in
