Well this one comes out of left field. According to Jim Meehan of The Spokesman Review, 2013 Center Ryan Edwards of Glacier High in Kalispell, MT has verbally committed to play ball for the Zags. Ryan is a 7 footer with great size (some estimates put him at close to 300 pounds). He had also received interest from Washington St., Boise St., Montana, and Montana State.
Ryan had this to say on his commitment:
"The atmosphere, the academics, the whole program in general. Just an awesome school...I think my hook shot is pretty good. I need to work on facing up to the basket, working on my conditioning and it’s getting better already."Needless to say there is not a whole heck of a lot of information out there on Ryan. He will not be participating in AAU basketball so there wont be any highlight tapes to check out via YouTube. He did manage to average about 13 points, 11 boards and 3 blocks per game last season. It has been said he is a capable scorer with his right and left hand, and while that will definitely be helpful, he likely will need some work on the offensive end at the D1 level. He played tennis last year which could hint at some agility for his position. His weight and conditioning will be a constant issue, but with the right attention from the staff he could get that under control. According to his mom this was his second visit to Spokane and he had received offers from Wazzu and Montana. It would be pretty safe to say he will be a prime candidate for a redshirt when he arrives on campus for the simple fact that Karnowski will be the heir to the throne and minutes will be tough to come by with Dower and Olynyk still around.
His size alone makes him an intriguing prospect, definitely someone who could come in and play spot minutes early on against smaller opponents and exert his will around the rim. He fits the mold of big physical post players that the staff continues to bring into the fold. I would love a chance to watch some of his game tape to get a better handle on him, but at this time its just not out there. We will definitely dig deeper and try to uncover some more information on Ryan. As always, GO ZAGS!
